ON THE BACK BURNER

Family Meal Day. We celebrated my son's birthday with his fav food. Bagels and lox, pickles and sliced tomatoes. He is easy. I made a from scratch cake. Probably the first scratch cake since we moved from Evanston. Actually, we are a pie family more than a cake family. A couple of years ago, our youngest grandson was on a baking kick and while he was visiting us in Florida, he made me a birthday cake. The main ingredient was Coke. It was really quite good. My mother was not much of a cook, but I remember her once making a chocolate cake from a recipe on the back of the Hershey cocoa box. That was really good too. In fact, that recipe is still on the back of the cocoa container, I just don't make it. My mother in law, who was probably a worse cook than my mother, only ate egg yolks. So she always had a collection of egg whites and did make angel food cake. I can't remember how they tasted, but I am sure that they must have been  good.  Anyone who can make a scratch angel food cake makes an impression on me. I have  a few index cards with cake recipes from various friends. I give the recipes the name of the baker. One of my favorites was a  cake made with dates . And another , where you poke holes in the baked cake and pour lemon and sugar syrup over the warm cake. Every now and then , I look at the recipe cards, remember the people who gave them to me, and put the card away. It's the memory that counts.
