ON THE BACK BURNER

I know that my friends in Venice are having a rough time right now and I worry about them all. But life goes on and I will focus on the good news, that even if they had some structural damage, or lost trees and maybe ( and I pray not) water damage, they are well. All the rest is commentary . Here in PT , I spent hours making challah and sticky bums. When you get that itch for sticky buns, you just have to make sticky buns. Store bought can't compete. To help me out, I froze most of them. I am not much of a snacker , but good bread and some special home made bakery products are irresistible. I had a date with my DiL to visit a flower and veggie farm about 40 miles from us. My grandson works there several days a week and he wanted us to see the beautiful gardens. What a treat. I am a city  girl and I have never seen crops this close. I've seen  them from the road , from a train ,at farmers market , road side stands and the produce section at the grocery. Never  this close. And this was considered a small operation. In the green house, the scent of basil was like a heavy perfume. Tomatoes and cucumbers were growing vertically to let other crops grow under them. Rows of flowers to keep bugs away. Outside , Celery, carrots, green onions,,broccoli, different types of salad greens string beans, green and purple. I am probably leaving some veggies out. So many flowers, most names I don't know. I recognized sunflowers, roses, nicotinia, marigold, hollyhocks. and some that I can't spell. It is the end of the season for a lot of the veggies, so the next step is to make compost out of all those beautiful eatables  . To help the cause, my DiL and I each came home with a huge bunch of basil and for me, some green tomatoes. I already made a pint jar of pesto and next I am going to over eat fried green tomatoes.
