ON THE BACK BURNER

Tonight, 5 of us went  out to dinner. This may be the first time in 3 years, that we actually went to , and sat down , together, in a restaurant. We have ordered in, ordered carry out,had a catered wedding reception in a hotel, but this was the first ,going in and sitting down ,in3 years. I have been eating in restaurants with my eating buddy, but not with my family. We went to a well established, popular restaurant ,here in PT.,that is at the waters edge. This was the plan because my DiL's visiting mom was part of our group. The restaurant was on the second floor. I didn't feel much ambiance ,it seemed rather dreary, but we sat out side to enjoy the view. Our small table with those high chairs were more conducive to having a drink, but the view was what we came for. When the wait person came to our table, we said that we would start with some water. Seemed a reasonable request. He said that there was water in the next room and we could help ourselves .He wasn't rude, just saying that the way here was to go and get your water yourself. My DiL went and carried first 3 glasses of water to our table and then went back and got 2 more. We asked for a menu. On our table was printed what looked like a big bar code thing. Our waiter said that we should take our cell, phones and use that bar code to check  the menu on our phones. What? If we wanted to see a menu, there was one posted on the wall in the dining room. I was getting a little annoyed, but we figured it out and I ordered a steak sandwich. Too bad, because that was on an old menu and they didn't have it on the menu any more. I finally just ordered a hamburger , and because I was so dumb struck by the whole experience, I forgot to say that it should be as rare as the cook would make it. I can't believe that I forget to say rare. The food was just OK and I am curious to know what was left for a tip, after our no service, service. There  are a lot of good water views in PT., so next time we'll check if there is actual personal  service . No water, No menu, steep stairs.....Bah Humbug. But a view of the Cascade mountains. That 's what we came for.
