ON THE BACK BURNER

I know two neighborhood dog walkers well enough to have conversations with them. Neither of their dogs like Dixie and the feeling is mutual. Dixie doesn't like any dog. I saw the man dog walker come out of the woods alone. I gestured in a universal way of "what's going on"? He burst out crying. His beloved pet died during the night. My first impulse was to hug him, which I didn't. One because of Covid and neither of us was masked and two, I don't know him that well. But we shared a cry together and I hope that I made him feel not so sad. I came home with my face still wet from the tears.
