ON THE BACK BURNER

Port Townsend is different. I don't think that I have heard a car horn since I got here. People have fences,  but it's to keep deer out, not people. The police seem to be well trained in how to handle mental illness in dealing with the homeless population. People stop their cars and pull off the street, randomly, to pick blackberries. It's the only place that I have ever been where at 12:30 on a Saturday, there is a sign on the carry out restaurant that says" sold out. Closed". And my son and I were so ready for their fish po boy.  This town has two franchises , McDonald's and Subway. There is no CVS or Walgreen's. I think that there are 3 or 4 traffic lights. They have three scenic round abouts that are one lane of traffic and easy to manage. the street signs are visible and every street seems to have a sign.  There are no parking meters. There are a lot of cars with old Bernie stickers on them. The library closes Sunday and Monday's. There is one landmark store, called Don's, where you can fill your prescription or buy spices, cosmetics, underwear or pots and pans. Traffic flow depends on the ferry schedule. They do have two grocery stores. No deli's,but a taco truck.Starbucks is in one of the grocery stores.People are passionate about where they go for coffee. Usually it's a local place, Sunrise. Gas is $3.91. a gallon. You need a boat or a motor home in your driveway, or both. You see more mutts than designer dogs. They all seem well behaved, except Dixie, who wants to attack every dog  she passes. All in all, if you have to be away from your friends and your home, it's not a bad place to be.
