ON THE BACK BURNER

These are difficult times for life events. Weddings and funerals are not as we once celebrated or grieved with the family. Several weeks ago, my congregation had a drive through to celebrate a congregants 100 th birthday, as he sat under the  portico and had cars drive  by,honking or holding up signs of well wishes. Today ,we mourned a congregants death.,by sitting in cars, in  the synagogues parking lot,  or in my case, by cell phone, hearing his life story, his accomplishments, his love of family. No matter the lack of physical contact, of being in a sanctuary with  officiants, it still brought closure to the family, to be able to have some part of a traditional Jewish funeral. It is the worse of times ,not even near  the best of times, but we find a way around this social distancing and we were able to come together in this new way to say good by to our friend , and still be part of our religious community.
