ON THE BACK BURNER

I thought that it was funny when my grandson came to pick up his Shabbat challah he said that he was going to pick up Chinese food. Another generation carries on the tradition of Chinese food on Christmas. I confess, this was not something that my growing up family did in N.O., nor was it something that we did in my family. Until I moved to Venice, I didn’t know what I had been missing. When Bob and I were first married and lived on base in Mobile, Alabama, they just got their first Chinese restaurant. To get in, it was so popular that we actually had to wait outside in a line. Our family in Evanston had a favorite Chinese restaurant.  Because we started taking the kids there when they were quite young, we started out ordering the “ for two”. Then we had to keep uping the order by the time the first kid was going off to college , we were up to the “ for six” with some side orders. But we never went on Christmas. Could be because we were at our cottage for the Christmas break. Fremont,Michigan  was the next large town and I don’t remember a Chinese restaurant there. Too bad. It would have been welcomed.
