ON THE BACK BURNER

I knew that I saw the masks on Asian’s a long time before the masks became part of my daily wardrobe. But ,thinking back to Jan. 2020 at the Tel Aviv airport, when I saw some travelers from Asia walk through the lobby, I had a nervous feeling. They were communicating with each other, they were animated and the masks were on them, like they were born with that piece of face covering.  Here in Port Townsend, a community of less than 9,000 residents, I can probably count on both hands, the few people who are not masked, or ,if I am out with Dixie and they are also walking and not masked, they cross the street when they see me.It isn’t a hostile act, or a political statement, they get it.I try not to go into the grocery , but sometimes, I just want a forgotten item and my order is in the trunk already. I run in,  but I don’t feel good about it. Here I have just spent 11  months, in limbo , and I feel like it will all be wasted, if I contract the virus. I recently read that going to the grocery, as long as masks are worn ,is pretty safe. I hope so, because this is about the only time I get to be where people who are not related to me ,are . Hate to end a sentence with a preposition. Joke... a new student with a deep southern drawl ,on campus at a Ivy League school, asked a fellow student,” where’s the law library at”? The student, smugly said,” I can tell you didn’t go to Harvard, because you ended your sentence with a preposition”. The new student thought for a minute and said”where’s the law library at, asshole”. I just thought this was funny.  .
