ON THE BACK BURNER

My turkey fought me every step of the way.I have no preference to any specific turkey. It can be Butterball or Organic. I am an equal opportunity turkey eater. I don’t particularly love turkey,  but I don’t mind it. Because my kids here in Port Townsend care more than I do, I bought an organic turkey. It went into the freezer and a week ago, it was transferred to a refrigerator. Two days ago, I took it out of the fridge, still frozen solid. It spent the day in a water bath in my bath tub. Then I tried to clean out its insides and get it ready for a dry rub and a butter massage. The inside was still so frozen that I did what I could, no dry rub ,no butter treatment, but paper towels trying to pull out ice. Thanksgiving day, there were still patches of ice inside cavity. I have never had a turkey that resisted being defrosted. I did the best that I could. Opting for butter and salt and pepper . It traveled to the big house to go into their larger oven. There was an oven malfunction and their electric oven played games, going from 150 to 400. Finally my DiL stabilized the oven

,but by this time, I was annoyed with the turkey and decided to just ignore it for 3 plus hours. Didn’t check it, didn’t baste it, didn’t look at it.I was punishing it. At the appropriate time, I stuck a thermometer in it and it registered as being overcooked. When my grandson carved  it, it was perfect and probably the best,  no fuss turkey I have ever cooked. There is no moral to this story.
