ON THE BACK BURNER

Washington is called the Ever Green state and you can certainly see that if you take a walk through the wooded paths. There isn’t much color changes, few of those beautiful reddish golden leaves that you see in the midwest and east coast. On the ground are a light sprinkling of yellowish leaves. I have several skinny trees right next to the trailer. Their yellow leaves came down all at once. I took one of those little kids plastic rake and made a very  small pile . But the greenery is all around me. Cyprus trees are every where. The apple and pear trees still have their leaves. People around the neighborhood are picking their apples and pears.  I lost track of how many gallons of cider my grandson is putting up. People call friends to come and just pick  their apples. They have too many for their own use. My son is dehydrating apple slices ,hoping not to want to eat  them all at one time. The pears are a little tricky. They ripen  from the inside out, so the pear feels really firm, but may be ready to pick. I always wondered why the pears that I  bought were sometimes mushy inside. I was buying them by feeling how ready they were to eat. Too late by that time, I learned. I saw that cranberries were on display. I had to remind myself that Thanksgiving wasn’t that far away. What happened to my year. Some body took it from me.
