ON THE BACK BURNER

this was my writing assignment for this week. Use screens and screams in your writing.

If I tell you one more time  to close the screen door”..I wasn’t sure what I would follow that with, but it didn’t matter. I did what I did almost every day of summer . I took  the spring off of the screen door and let the door stay opened. it stayed that way until the sun went down and the kids came in for the evening. The next step was to give each kid a fly swatter . That was the evenings entertainment at our Michigan cottage. At a penny a dead fly, the four  kids ran around our cottage  smacking at flies. They sometimes missed and hit a deserving sibling, depending on who did what to the kid who got swatted, but for the most part, they were after flies and pennies. We had  no TV, and bad radio reception. But we had a sand beach, water  and a screen door that stayed open from Memorial day  through Labor day. I wonder if the kids remember the screen door , the flies and the pennies.

——————————————————————————————I I scream, you scream, we all scream  for Ice cream.I don’t know why, but my  mother in law loved this and would say it often to my children. It replaced “ patty  cake, patty cake” when she would try to distract a grandchild. Maybe she really liked ice cream. Then I decided to go to Google to see where this slogan came from. It was actually a song ,written in the 1920 ‘s.It became a Dixieland Jazz standard. Who knew. It was followed by commercializing it for a new ice cream sensation,  in 1927 , called I - Scream. This was later changed to Eskimo Pie. Now I think I know why this slogan was so  popular with my mother in law. She was a flapper, her happiest days were as a young single woman in the Jazz age.  Going to speak easys, drinking illegal whiskey, being single and dancing away the night, was her life. I scream, you scream ,we all scream for ice cream, to her, was the song of her hey day. I understand now.
