Memory
A memory .
There is a Jewish reading that as a Congregation, we read together. After each thought, the statement We remember,is spoken
and echos in our thoughts. What I remember is being 10 and hearing a newsboy hark”japan attacks Pearl Harbor.” What did that mean?I remember going to the Friday night movies with my friends
and watching newsreels of the liberation at Auscfitz .The bones of the dead and the skeletel figures of the still living. What did that mean? I remember the death of Franklyn Roosevelt. My Mother cried. What did that mean.? I remember a confetti parade down
Canal Street when peace was declared. What did that mean? I remember the murder of Martin Luther King. I remember the Burning, shootings, and looting of stores on the West side of Chicago. What did that mean? I remember the Democratic convention in Chicago
when our mayor , Mayor Daley, said”Shoot to Kill “ of the protesters. What did that mean? I remember John Kennedy, and Robert Kennedy’s assassination. What did that mean? I remember the
brutal murder of Mathew Wayne Shepard. What did that mean?I remember the twin Towers. What did that mean? I remember the shootings in class rooms and university campuses , mosques and Synagogues.
What does this mean.? But I also remember the righteous gentile, I remember the Rosa Parks, I remember the voice of Dr. King.I remember the voices of reason. These are the things that I will remember.
