ON THE BACK BURNER

This Sunday in the NYT, in the Travel section, they listed 52 places to visit in 2020. I was surprised to see a number of the places that I have been, on the list. Washington,DC,Sicily,Ceasaria,Israel,Colorado Springs,Grand Isle, La,The Bahama,Austin,Texas.,Paris,Lake District, England. I didn’t do this in one year. My first  trip to Washington was over 50 years ago. I can still remember parts of it. Our youngest child, a son was being toilet trained. We kept a Planters Peanut can in the back of our VW bus for emergencies. I guess there was one while we were driving around DC and I have this memory of him peeing into the peanut can ,probably mooning the car next to ours. Sicily was , maybe , 35 years ago. It was beautiful . The colors yellow and blue come to mind. Sunny, great relaxing lunch ,lots of people, tourists.Ceasaria was on the agenda when I went on a guided trip to Israel with Rabbi Dan and some members of the JCV. What stands out are the toilets built into the natural stones. Go figure that would be what comes first to my mind.I come from New Orleans , so going to Grand Isle was no big deal. I only know that we drove there in my Daddy’s  Chevie that we got after the war. World War 11 war.The Bahamas was cruise time. Maybe it was our first cruise.  Texas.I never would have gone to Texas  if my sister hadn’t evacuated there. I went to the flag ship Whole Foods. That was memorable. I bought one of my favorite cook books there.  It has the salmon recipe that I make all of the time.  I forgot Colorado Springs. Our daughter lives in Colorado, Our son lived in Colorado. We spent August at the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park for years and years. One year we decided to tour the state. We camped in a tent with our two little dogs, one or two nights. We saw natural springs where there shouldn’t have been springs. I have a photo of us all there. A son ,a daughter, Bob , a son in law, a daughter in law and at least 5 dogs. Paris , where  I ran  a Woman’s only Marathon with  two of my daughters. That was a blast. I made plans to go back with Bob on the fast train that ran between England and Paris, under the English channel. Bob had a health set back and I had to cancel the trip. We never made it to Paris . I am sorry about that. .Lake District ,England. Bob and I biked through the country side. That was our first trip out of the states. Passports and tour books. Rain and traffic circles. That was a fun vacation. I didn’t know that I had seen so much of the world. Pretty good for a kid from a little mining town... wait, that was a soap opera.
