ON THE BACK BURNER

I wish some one would say to me” oh, you are alone. How sad”. Because now, thanks to a letter to the editor in the NYT, I know what to say. A woman traveling alone and eating lunch in a restaurant in France had the experience of another woman coming up to her table and make the “sad” remark. I liked her response so much that I clipped her letter and I am saving it. Her response was,”I’m not alone. I’m free”. She continued  in her letter to the editor, that every woman in the restaurant applauded. Good for her. I’ve traveled alone and had some meals alone. It’s not a big deal. I do make the point when I am being seated that I would rather have another table. It’s a power move, tells the maitre de that I won’t sit at a table no one else wants. Try it. It gives you a short term rush.
