ON THE BACK BURNER

I did it all. I renewed my drivers license  and I voted. One stop shopping , almost. My license is good for 10 years. I really think that at a certain age, you should be given more than an eye test to be able to drive. especially in a town like Venice, where we are not used to taking public transportation, a car is a must.. or the number of a car service. The best gift a kid can give an aging parent is a car service open ended gift. The parent can still have a sense of independence and not have to ask anyone for a ride.. or worse, not go out because they couldn’t get there. My Aunt Mary, who retired to N.O. from  the Bronx, never learned to drive. Why would you when you lived in New York. Mary , was a special lady who people loved and she always got a ride. on the other hand, my mother was not a nice person and no one ever offered her a ride. The moral of the story is that you should be nice so that when you get old and can’t drive, and need a ride, someone will ask if they can give you one. That shouldn’t be too hard for some of us.
