ON THE BACK BURNER

Have you given any thought to the fact that Thanksgiving is maybe 5 or 6 weeks away... and it is still summer. Who can think of putting a turkey in an oven when we are still swimming in the  gulf. I have one more frozen package of cranberries in my freezer. I don't remember how many bags I bought for freezing, but I have rationed them out, with this last bag just tempting me every time I open the freezer. I almost used it this week with some chicken I was serving. But I couldn't bring myself to let it go. Maybe next week.I use to love the canned cranberries. That is all I knew. That along with canned asparagus is what I knew. We , meaning my Mother, had a pantry full of cans. And Campbell's tomato soup. The French Market had fresh produce. Big juicy local Creole tomatoes. Fresh okra. Why we ate canned veggies is beyond me. Canned spinach. Canned peas,canned string beans. The crazy thing is , I really liked them. Now, I keep some cans of tomatoes in my pantry. And dog food. My pantry has things in it that I seldom need. Black strap molasses. A jar of Espresso instant coffee? a tube of anchovy paste. Except for the molasses, I should probably throw the other two things out.  Why did I buy them in the first place.I wonder what the chefs on "Chopped" could do with molasses, anchovy paste and espresso instant coffee.

Don't quite know how this got to me but it was on the top line of my computer (not in email) But I really enjoyed it. I truly admire you.
