ON THE BACK BURNER

I saw on the weather channel that the mountains could expect 2 feet of snow. That was the prime reason that I came back to Florida when I did. I think I forgot how to drive in the snow. And I don't really want to anymore. This is the time that I can use an expression that I really don't like, "been there, done that" .There was a time when I wouldn't let the thought of snow stop me from going anywhere. We had a system worked out when we drove to our Michigan cottage. Often we didn't even hit snow until we were in the back country. Then we had this crazy thing that almost always worked for us. Two wheels on the passenger side on the gravel or grass and the two wheels on the drivers side ,on the road. It gave us just enough traction to get as close to our cottage as we could, about 1/4 mile .That is if we didn't hit anyone's mailbox as we did this dumb thing. Then we would leave the car, carry as much as we could and slog through the snow to the cottage to get a sled for the rest of the stuff. We brought up all of our food, so sometimes we made a few trips back and forth. the kids thought that this was a great game. The next morning we could deal with the car. By the time we warmed up the cottage with our reluctant furnace, it was time to jump into bed with all of our clothes on because the beds were too cold for comfort. Man, those were the good old days.
