ON THE BACK BURNER

I could not write a word yesterday. I could only move my eye balls. My grandson's and I hiked for 5 hours, from an altitude of 400 feet to an altitude of 4,000 ft. We went from tree line to a ridge where we clocked winds at 40 miles an hour to gusts over 50. We had about a mile of this. I felt as if I could be swept off my feet. The gift when we got to our destination... a beautiful wood structure with a view of the Denali mountains and everything in between. The cabin, which belongs to our lodge, is 8 sided, with windows on 6 sides. There is a 2 burner propane stove,a sink with cold water , a wood burning stove and couches built in on three sides, which were our beds. The center of the room has one huge table. The structure was built in Vermont, every board numbered, disassembled, put on a second hand school bus that had the seats removed and driven to Anchorage, where it was air lifted to this site and reassembled. The wind up here is so strong that the outhouse is bolted to the rocks. My backpack had only a few items in it, but my grandsons carried enough fire wood for our overnight stay, plus the food. My chef grandson made a pasta dish that included salmon that he had smoked. After the hike  up, I think we feel asleep by 8:30. It was a completely clear night and I woke up once to see the moon shining on the highest mountain in N. A and stars. That was the  real gift. The next morning , my grandson made us french toast from the challah that we carried up and we then cleaned up the cabin for the next visitors, and started our 4 hour hike down to Camp Denali. I got faster on the way down, and they had less to carry. But it is definitely harder . Did I mention that we only have outhouses here. Guests have outhouses near their cabins and there is a communal shower house. Men one side, women on the other. I took a fantastic hot shower in the staff shower room. How quickly one can adapt.
