ON THE BACK BURNER

I just had the best 4 th of July here in Port Townsend. Historic Fort Worden had live music groups going all afternoon, including my sons brass band. Of course his Sousaphone was the best part of the band, but his group had young people, old people , every people dancing and jiggling on the grass. I wish they had played longer. Then ,the finale.. my first laser light show. This was in place of fire works and I loved it. It was a complete afternoon and night of camaraderie , of people and so many dogs. It was civilized, no politics, no speeches, just a sense of community. The music was what brought everyone together. People just couldn't control their feet. They boogied , they swayed, 3 year olds jumped up and down. No partner necessary. I watched a woman , dressed in a red outfit with a feather red , white and blue feather boa kind of thing around her neck, give that to a little girl , who must have been about 6. That released that girl's inhibition and she began to twirl and swing her arms and just glow. It was startling to the lady who gave her the scarf and to me, who was watching. Such freedom. Guess that was what the day was all about. Next year, I'm going to bring a feather scarf and share it.
