ON THE BACK BURNER

I've gone from watching " Highway from Hell" on Netflix to watching "tidy". The woman, Maria Kondo , loves to tidy and has made a career of it. She goes into very unorganized homes and helps the occupants figure out how to organize belongings and as an aside, clear their thinking . I am a thrower away - er. I am a little sentimental, but not so much.  (If this is true, then why have I saved all of my Marathon racing ribbons. ) Some of the homes , beautiful on the outside , are filled with stuff. I don't know why it isn't called hoarding. She has them take everything out of the drawers and closet and mound it on the bed. Then they should  touch every piece and ask if it gives them joy. And this is why I probably keep my ribbons, I still get joy from the memory of the race I ran and finished. If they get joy, they can keep it. If not, out it goes. I have followed her advice in my closet and drawers, and it really feels great to open a drawer and see all of the items standing up, visible, ready to choose to be worn. My surprise is , how hard, physically and emotionally, these people get about the process. They have more on their plate then organization. Security  issues, parent issues, self worth, all of this comes into throwing out a item, if it be clothing, paper, or books. They cry, they keep, they throw away, they donate' they rationalize, they come to terms , they organize. All in  about 40 minutes. Now that is amazing.
