I attended a Thanksgiving Interfaith Service and I came away with a couple of thoughts. Just showing up is sometimes all that you have to do . Just show up. It reminded me that my Rabbi ,from our Congregation in Evanston , marched with Dr. Martin
Luther King. Our Rabbi showed up. I remembered that we lived in an integrated neighborhood and that our kids were redistricted to another school to balance the ratio of blacks to whites in our desegregated school system. Now, I feel as if we , as a family,
just showed up. I can think of times when I just showed up. I think I have been showing up without realizing what a statement that made. At the service, a minister talked about listening not being a passive act. I never thought about listening like that.
Sometimes I listen because I am stuck with a talker. Sometimes I listen because I am interested. Sometimes I think that I am listening, but I'm not, really. I guess, to make listening an action and not just a passive act, You really have to show up .That's
what people who just show up, must be doing.
