ON THE BACK BURNER

Why didn't my family tell me about the Holocaust or Krystal naught? I would have been four when Krystal naught happened. Too early for nightmares. But what about the Holocaust? There was not a word spoken in front of me about the Holocaust. I learned about it watching Friday night news reels when I went to the Prytania Movie House.,along with the serial cowboy shorts. I went down town to Canal street and watched parades of military dignitaries that came through the Port of New Orleans. There were ticker tape parades that we were excused from school to attend. I saw service men at my Grandmothers. My sister dated some service men. But I never heard a word about what was going on in Europe. I know that my Mother very occasionally got a letter from Russia from her sibs  who were still there. But why didn 't they discuss the Holocaust with me. I remember singing Hativah at Sunday school, but we never discussed why it was so important. I can only think that they were afraid that something might happen to them because they were Jewish. I wish they had shared more .
