ON THE BACK BURNER

What a wonderful day. First stop at a Goodwill. Too expensive for a thrift store.  I'll continue to do my shopping in Venice. Onward to the Olympic National Forest. Second stop at the hut of a native American who was smoking salmon with Alder wood. We didn't evn wait to get to the car. We ate the salmon that had just come out of the smoker while we stood in the parking lot.I have never had freshly smoked anything and it was worth every dollar. Stopped  next at the Makah Indian Reservation to get a park permit so we could spend the rest of the day hiking and whale watching. The Park on the reservation is Camp Flattery. From the furthest point that we hiked, we were at the most NW point in the Continental US . Canada was a little more than a stones throw away. But there it was.  Now I have been to the southern most point in Key West and the furtherest  in the NW. I did get to see a few whales, but it took real concentration. What we did see and I was wishing that they had picked another day for this was two  helicopters taking turns removing an old oil container out at the light house right across from us. We did get a laugh when we saw the helicopter fly by with a portojohn hanging from a cable. The forests are slush and green. Different from mountain ranges and forests that I have seen in the Rocky Mountains, or the Smokies . These are so lush and green and at times, dark and forbidding looking. My heart rate raced a bit  on the return, uphill. We were lucky in that it didn't start raining until we were on the way back to Port Townsend. And then it dawned on me that this must be what winter is here. The rain just comes up unexpectedly and you better be prepared for it because it does this a lot.
