ON THE BACK BURNER

There is much to say for hospice. The patient is home in a familiar environment. The family is near by. You don't worry that he is being ignored when he needs help. There are no invasive tests being done.He isn't awakened to have vitals done, ten minutes after he just fell into a deep sleep. You won't get a $25 bill for that extra box of tissue that you asked for. On  the other hand, being in a hospital situation, he  can have his bed changed and be repositioned by helpful nurses. When you are self doubting, there is a nurse nearby for a professional evaluation, immediately.  Your house isn't upside down with equipment that let 's you know that  things are not going back to the way they were before. If you need to run out for an hour or so, you know that you can, because a staff is there. I wouldn't trade the hospice support and the wonderful workers and volunteers who are here when you need  them, but sometimes , you just think about maybe the other arrangement would be easier on you, the care giver.
