ON THE BACK BURNER

I need to tell you this  statistic. Every other person ,who has a partner, will be a care giver. I made this up, but it makes sense. If you are a couple, and one of you gets a long term illness, one of the couple will become a care giver.   It is not the best of roles. You don't get paid for your value as a care giver. It's not a profession. What it does, is make a family come together. You find out that you did a good job with the kids as they rally to help and visit and call and be concerned. You wear your emotions on the outside. People can see them.People that you know are quick to offer help and they mean it. The problem is that you don't know what kind of help to ask for. Services are available if you look and ask. You have to take advantage of them. It isn't taking advantage, it is a help line that you need, whether or not you admit it. You have to get a different mind set. Its not about me. It's about him. But then, too, It's not about him. It's about me,too, the care giver. Services work both sides of the aisle. I am telling you this to save you the stress of finding out what being a caregiver is like. When your time comes, if you are the giver, take a breath and do what you have to do.
