ON THE BACK BURNER

I am not sure of the brain capacity of small animals and birds, but I think they have a sense of humor. I watched two squirrels playing," chase me." One would be chased one way around a tree trunk, stop, and go the other way to be the chaser. I have watched one squirrel wait to jump the other in a surprise move, then both scamper off to play some place else. I watch the birds around here and they play a game of "I chase you, now you chase me. " The other day, I saw a crow fly to the top of a light pole with something in his beak. Another crow came by, sat down next to the first crow and started jabbering at him. First crow wasn't interested.. he did not share, but he didn't fight him off, either. We now , it seems ,to have a bumper crop of bunnies . When I get near to them as I walk Noodle(who doesn't even know they are near) the bunnies freeze. Only their ears move ,like a radar screen. As soon as they think it is safe, they start nibbling the grass, or they run off to Momma. I missed this scene, but my Grandson watched a bald eagle land on a tree that we watch because birds seem to like it. First the eagle came, then a hawk that hangs around here came. The hawk took one look at his limb companion and flew off. Probably a smart move.
