ON THE BACK BURNER

On FaceBook  the last few days, people have written about lost pets and many offered rewards. It is devastating when a family pet is lost. Our first family dog was Wally. He had a terrible and justified reputation in Evanston. The first few days that we had him, he climbed the fence and was lost. We were so worried. He didn't know us that well, we didn't know him that well. In fact,I was afraid of him the first 24 hours that we had him. He was a collie, German Shepard, Spitz mix. He would stare at me . He wanted to go out.I got the message. We lost him that first week, but he came back. After that , he was hard to keep home. He usually beat the dog catcher back to our house. Then we had Charlie, the first. He was off leash while we walked around our lake in Michigan . It started snowing and a white out blew us apart and Charlie disappeared. It was Christmas Eve and the kids were hysterical. One of the kids called the local radio station and made a plea for Charlie's return. We suspected that he found shelter in a fishing shack and the door blew shut. During the night, we heard a bark at the door and there was Charlie ,with a frost bitten nose. We were so happy to see him that we bundled him on our bed, where he immediately vomited.  Then, even Cricket got lost for about 10 minutes. Cricket never strayed. She was out with me as I was doing something around the condo, probably watering our little patch of garden. She took a walk. We couldn't believe it. After about 10 to 20 minutes, she comes walking home .She was visiting down the street. Now Noodle is afraid to step over the threshold. His perception isn't that good and we have to encourage him to step out. But one day, he got very excited and bolted out , without a leash. I grabbed his tail and he stopped. With his poor vision and hearing, if he got lost, I would hate to think about what would happen to him. He was hit by a car before we adopted him. I don't know how many lives he has left.
