ON THE BACK BURNER

I was waiting at a traffic light and the truck next to me had a large ad for Scholastic Book company. This made me remember "My Weekly Reader" which I think, Scholastic might have printed. I loved my "Weekly Reader". I loved the paper, I loved the smell of it. I even think my teachers may have written a whole lesson plan around that "Weekly Reader". I can't remember if we saved them in a binder ,or just took them home as a reward when we were finished reading them. Maybe when I was in 3rd or 4th grade , and it was World War 11, our teacher had a box of "Readers Digest" and each kid in the class would get one and read the condense story that was in it. Then we had to write a book report  and take another book for the next week. I still have a favorite story that I read. I have never forgotten it. It was "Momma's Bank Account". I have no memory of the author, but the lesson has stuck with me.It was this: during the depression, when her kids needed something that they thought was very special and at the moment couldn't figure out how they could afford to buy it, Momma would say,"well if it is so important, I will take it out of my bank account"". The kid would say that Momma shouldn't do that. They would find a way, get an after school job, put off getting it, or maybe it wasn't all that important to have. The bank account was more special, for emergencies that they really might need. Years later, grown and successful, they found out that Momma never had a bank account.I love this story.
