ON THE BACK BURNER

I have spent the last two nights, three days in the hospital with Bob. He came in with a horrendous cough , that led to heart failure and a heart attack. His behavior here was bizarre, hostile, uncompliant and delusionary. I was called back to the hospital  , each of the two nights, to spend the night with him because they couldn't control him. He told a daughter that he was a prisoner and couldn't get away. He said that we lived in Skokie, Illinois.I gave the staff his papers showing that I had the authority to make medical decisions for him. I was getting ready for a bad outcome.I was planning what my next step would be because I knew that I couldn't  take him home like this. He hadn't slept since I brought him in and since all of his vitals were normal,  on the second night, they gave him a sleeping potion. He was then sleeping quietly for the first time.I left the hospital the morning of his third day here , (still sleeping) to go and feed and walk Noodle, who had been alone while I was in the hospital. When I returned ,less then two hours later, he was still sleeping. That makes 10 hours of sleep. When he woke up, he was Bob again. Even tempered, sweet, agreeable. Mild mannered Clark Kent in a hospital gown.Where had the real Bob been? Hospitals do this sometimes. You come in sick, disoriented, confused and something happens. Now he is eating, sitting in a recliner, waiting to see if he goes home today or tomorrow. My story has a happy ending. This can happen again and it probably will, but the staff here at Venice memorial Hospital were patient, polite, caring and I can't speak more highly of their professionalism.Just take my word for it, You don't have to try it out for yourself.
