ON THE BACK BURNER

I volunteered for a few hours this week end at a dog adoption event that was held at Home Depot. I learned a lot about puppy mills and about why some puppy mill dogs have some strange habits. I also learned that a teething beagle puppy will nibble a friendly arm with very sharp teeth. Hence the three band aids, courtesy of Home Depot ,on my left arm. Dogs that are "throw aways" for these terrible breeders are either euthanized after they are no longer producing reasonably healthy pups, or are sold at auction.  AUCTIONS. There are people who make their living doing this. People like the rescue agency that I did the volunteering for, will go to the auction and bid and buy as many dogs as they can afford, and bring these poor dogs back to their sanctuaries. So many of them are sick.  Some have never been out of a cage. I tried to put a collar on one so that we could take it out to pee and it went ballistic. It had never had a collar, a leash, or been on solid ground.   Because they want to keep their cage clean, they poop by backing up to the cage. When they are adopted they have to be taught not to back up to a wall and poop against the wall. If you hold one of these guys, they do a swimming motion with their paws, that is because they only know doing that against their cages .Some have never had human touch. Isn't this just too sad. Noodle almost had a companion pup.
