ON THE BACK BURNER

There Is a certain frenzy around town. The possibility of a hurricane has natives on edge. The shelves with water are empty. I am betting on the hurricane by-passing us and only leaving us with rain and wind. When I was a kid, I loved hurricane season. I didn't know that it was a season. I thought it happened to coincide with the baseball play offs .It was a fun time for kids. Maybe they weren't so devastating back in those old days.We didn't have any electronics that needed chargers. We probably didn't even have a flash light. We had candles and match books.School was dismissed. My Daddy didn't go to work. We may even have had a real ice box still. There was no freezer to worry about defrosting. I remember watching the electric overhead wires burning on the street car line. That was pretty interesting. The fire went from pole to pole. Then there was the greenish color that was the quiet eye of the storm. We were so foolish. Everyone went outside to see it. No TV weather people to hype up a storm. Maybe we listened to a radio until we lost electricity, but I don't remember that part. Everything was so much simpler then, even the hurricanes.
