ON THE BACK BURNER

I saw them again . It's not hard for me to spot. They are walking around the block. I am waiting at a traffic light. He holds her hand. She is a few millimeters behind. He is taking her for a daily walk. I recognize her stance. I recognize her walk pattern. I recognize his resolve to take her for a walk. She walks without looking around. She just puts one foot in front of the other because he has her hand and won't let go. I recognize this life. I saw it before in the VA Clinic waiting room. A couple walks in together, she first. He goes to the desk to register. She waits by the door. I see her face. I recognize it . He is asked to give his social security number to confirm his appointment. He looks at his wife. I recognize that look. She gives him the numbers and he repeats them to the receptionist. I recognize this. I cry in the car. I cry at the VA clinic. I cry because I recognize it all.l
