Today is meatless Monday. I went to the grocery last Wednesday and they were having "Sushi Wednesday". When I was a kid, the only meal you could count on was Friday for fish and Sunday for roast beef, cooked to death. The reason for Fish on Friday is
that New Orleans was , at that time, majority Catholic and Catholics didn't eat meat on Friday. Simple. You live in New Orleans and you do what the natives do.On TV ,way back when the kids were watching, I think there was a Chef BOy Ar Dee commercial about
Thursday being their day.I confess, I gave my kids spaghetti o's, and they seemed to have turned out OK. We had a varied menu when I was growing up, but except for fish and roast, it was cooks choice. None of the meals were that memorable, no matter who the
cook was. We did have a salad every night. I think that news worthy and forward thinking. Always a veggie, never anything creamed ( the Kosher thing with milk and meat) and always dessert. We had french bread on the table , but never butter. What I miss a lot
is the French bread. There is no substitute for Leidenheimers bread. They still bake and I have tried, unsuccessfully, to have them ship me some. i guess I just have to go down and get some myself.
