ON THE BACK BURNER

I am making a promise to only write about dogs once a month. We have had a very smart dog( the late, great Wally), dogs who we joked had been hit by a 2 by 4 as a puppy, Dogs who were problems no matter how much we worked with them, they were still problem dogs, a dog who won your heart even if you didn't mean for it to happen , dogs with attitudes but were lovable, and now this dog who has no history. But we are making up one for him. Someone really loved this dog. What's not to love about a guy who is shorter in the front than in the back and has a barrel chest that makes him look like a walking brick. I just want to cry when he falls asleep on my chest and he lets out a sigh that lets you know that someone held him like this before and he remembers.Every day that he is with us is a day that lets us see how proud he is of himself. When we are on the way back from his walking, he seems to gain stature and he prances. At least once a day, never more than twice he gets very energetic and runs around in a burst of energy, running into a door jam that he doesn't see, or hitting the edge of a wall, but having a great time, sliding on the tile floor, getting momentum on an area rug, actually smiling with joy. Then a frantic leap into his neon green kennel , collapsing with his chew toy, to fall asleep for the next hours , sleeping soundly through TV,or thunder and rain. My dog walking friends say he is lucky to have us, I say we are lucky to have him.
