ON THE BACK BURNER

Did you know that pigeons mate for life ? Many birds do. This Is so good to know. I don't know why I know this. In Chicago , We had to cross under a viaduct to get to the running path in Lincoln Park. There was a lot of foot traffic on that single lane side walk. Bikes, two wheels and three wheels, skaters, runners, walkers.. Everyone had to use the same space. As did the pigeons who roosted under the viaduct and over our heads. I never got pooped on, but someone I knew did. He wasn't a nice guy , we learned, so he deserved the poop job. To get to the Clock Tower in the park, which had a quaint restaurant next to it and the tennis courts, you had to use the viaduct. Service trucks often got stuck under the bridge when they were taller than the viaduct. (You let the air out of the tires and hope that this works.) These memories of that area are just coming back to me. Now I remember that there was a beautiful totem pole there that a tribe of American Indians donated to the city. I went to a ceremony there when it was given back to the tribe because of it's religious importance to them. I should have saved the program. That viaduct was sorta nasty. Lake Shore Drive was above it and pieces of crumbling mortar sometimes fell off on to the side walk. Gangs sometimes wrote on the walls.Noise from the traffic over the viaduct was amplified. And that was the fun part. It was a tradition to yell as you ran under the bridge because your voice echoed. Whooooo whooooo worked best. Thanks for letting me write about this. A sweet memory of living in the city.
