ON THE BACK BURNER

Too many accidents lately with cars crashing into water and occupants not getting out of their vehicles. We live in an area where you can be identified as living "on the island" or "not on the island". So to be proactive, I ordered a gizmo that will cut my seat belt and smash my window , if I can hold my wits together and get out of a damaged car with a husband who has had a stroke, and relies on me . I don't know if I will panic in this situation, but at least I will have the tools. This is one more thing to worry about. I had only thought of wrong way drivers before, but falling into a water pit is now on my mind. Florida seems to get these wrong way drivers more than I remember hearing about before. Driving drunk doesn't help. You watch for people driving erratically , but what can you be thinking when a car coming at you the wrong way has it's head lights in your face. Scary. I'll add these things to what scares me when driving. It used to be that I was scared of driving over bridges. Got over that one. Then I was scared of driving on my daughter and then son's road in Colorado. There is no guard rail , it is one lane , going up, up, up, and it is beyond scary for me. I parked at the bottom of the road and either walked or laid down in the back of their car so I wouldn't see us fall over the edge. Thank God , I never had to back up to let an approaching car have the right of way. I usually screamed all the way up. The only other thing about driving is the memory I have of driving our son to his Montessori preschool for the afternoon session. Every little old lady on the north shore of the Chicago area would be driving to lunch at 15 miles an hour. When I picked up my son , they would be driving home at 10 miles an hour after a nice lunch , that included several drinks. They wanted to be sure that they didn't get into an accident after having those few drinks. At least we were all going in the same direction. Maybe I should walk more. There is a reason why it is said that walking is beneficial to your health.
