ON THE BACK BURNER

When I was driving home from the grocery store, I noticed a hand written sign that said"$500.00 reward for return of Green Parrot". I am not optimistic about the return of that pet. He could be in Georgia by now. I know that feeling when a pet gets lost. We lost our first Charlie while we were walking around our lake at our cottage. A sudden white up came along and we lost sight of him .A white out is when a sudden strong wind whips the snow around and you can't see anything. It took two days to find him. The kids were frantic. I think that he accidentally got into an open fishing hut on our frozen lake, the wind shut the door and he was stuck inside the hut. The kids think someone tried to make him their pet. His little nose was frost bitten when he finally found us. The first thing that he did was jump on our bed and vomit. Then of course, Cricket took her 20 minute disappearing act a few weeks ago. She has no concept of danger. I was so worried that she would just walk in front of a car. She's so little, who would see her. That ended happily, though. But how about losing a child? My parents were still alive and we were visiting them. Our oldest must have been about 5. She knew all of the right things that you teach your child. Name, how to spell our last name, telephone number and home address. However, we were not in Evanston, Illinois, but in New Orleans , Louisiana. She went out to play in front of the house and disappeared. When the police found her about 12 blocks away, she proudly knew her Grandma's name so they could reconnect us. It was "Grandma".
