ON THE BACK BURNER

My Father in law contributed our longer life span to indoor plumbing. I think that was probably right. I think you could say that Florida exists because of air conditioning. Without either, it could be a challenge. When I was growing up in New Orleans , my Mother had a way of keeping our apartment cool during the hottest days. We had this huge window fan in the dining room , the windows were closed during the hottest part of the day, the curtains were drawn and the heavy rugs were taken up and replaced with sisal rugs, which were straw like. ( My Daddy also wore seersucker suits) At night the windows were open and the fan reversed for allowing the cooler air in. Somehow, it worked. It was an art form. We were comfortable. I grew up in a great apartment. It was a four-plex, with the first floor being the basement. It also took up half of the city block. 5820 Hurst Street. One block from St. Charles Ave. and Nashville Ave. It had three bedrooms, a sun palor, formal dining room with a button on the floor to ring for the helper, two bathrooms and a living room ,plus foyer. I'd love to have that apartment now. In the basement, being southern, there was a bathroom and maids room. That is where Bob stayed while we ere courting. And the kitchen , big enough for a kitchen table ,plus, wait for it.. A butlers pantry with a sink. I bet the building went condo . Wish I was there to buy it.
