ON THE BACK BURNER

I meant to look up how many words a reasonably intelligent person knows and then the number of words a dog knows. I think that I am still winning on that front, but it is scary how much Cricket understands. Voice inflection counts for a lot of her understanding, but still, dogs are pretty good with their limited vocabulary. Do you call it vocabulary when they don't actually speak? Understand is better. Cricket understands a lot. She knows the difference between a "cookie" and "Kookie" her friend. She knows that when I say,"there is your buddy", it is a friend. Sometimes the friend is human, sometimes not. She knows the words for bodily function, although my son says she was going to go anyway. When I say,"go see Bob", she does. She has silent messages that she gives to me. A stare or pawing me, means out, now. I learned that one quickly. We had a dog who brought me his water bowl when it was empty. Now that was smart. I'm teaching her to play "dead". That's a no brainer. Every time she is lying down I say, "play dead". She's doing it right now. She is also snoring. Maybe this isn't working so well.
