ON THE BACK BURNER

I woke up thinking of all of the porches, decks, and park benches I've sat on. And a few balconies. Our house in Evanston had a large porch with a swing. That was a great place to sit after dinner. Being suburban, passing on the side walk were usually kids and a parent ,taking an after dinner walk around the block. I don't remember seeing many dog walkers . I guess we all had yards and that is where the dogs were. Then my sister had a great screened in porch in New Orleans. It had a swing too. That was a a good place to read the Times Picayune newspaper when they published in the morning. Our daughter had a wrap around porch in Oak Park, with a swing. A lot of foot traffic because she lived a few blocks from the train into the city. And a lot of dog walkers, because it was a mixed neighborhood of homes and apartments. Then we had decks. Our cottage let us do a lot of sitting. We sat for hours, days, months and looked at the lake. Never got tired of that activity. Colorado in August involved sitting on our rented cottage porch on rustic porch furniture. Sometimes we sat on the steps and sometimes we just brought out blankets and fell asleep lying on the them on the floor. That pine scented air, high altitude and blue skies meant some serious nap attacks. Especially , after a long hike, when I did that sort of thing. Park benches have their virtues ,too.I remember Bob and I falling asleep on a park bench in a park in Brussels. It was our first trip to Europe and with the long flight, the excitement and the change of time, we zonked out. We must have looked cute. Two Americans fast asleep on a park bench. We could have been robbed or harassed, but that was Brussels, not New York or Chicago. I've sat on two balconies that I can relate too. One was on a cruise ship , making it mandatory to have a balcony on any other cruise that I take. And the balcony on my Jerusalem daughters apartment. Bob spent hours sitting , watching Israel walk by. Cool.Thinking back ,over 79 years ago, my Grandmother had a swing on her porch in New Orleans. She would crochet from a large spool of very fine cotton yarn.I have one of her tablecloths that she crochet on that porch. I guess that is where my love of porches began..
