ON THE BACK BURNER

When is up not up , but down ?IN Jerusalem, it seems. Bob needed batteries for his hearing aid and we found a place that I could get them. After a cab ride to the address, we found the building but no door to get in. After a few miss steps and joining ranks with another American trying to get into the medical building, we saw a guard and an open doorway ,by a parking garage. The guard assured us that we were at No.9A building, although the number on the column said 7. We got on the elevator and punched No.2, the floor where the hearing aid was supposed to be. The elevator numbers went 7, then 6, then 5. We were confused. If we got on at 1, then the next stop should be 2. Right? Seems that the ground floor was 7 ,not 1. So we were going in the wrong direction. It also means that if we had walked up the hill instead of taking a taxi, we would have walked up The equivalent of seven flights of stairs. WE finally got to floor 2 as we had been told on the phone would be where we got the batteries, only to find that we really wanted floor 3. Life in Israel can be hard and confusing. We finally found the hearing aid clinic (notice we had to go to a clinic to get the batteries). They didn't take credit cards! Between us we had enough shekels to buy a 6 week supply .More than we needed, but we were not about to make this journey again. PS. Bob can hear you now.
