ON THE BACK BURNER

Must be something with babies and dogs. I read on FaceBook that the Zuckermans' baby said her first word. It wasn't what one hopes for. It wasn't MaMa or DaDa. It was "dog. " And of course, this reminded me of our youngest child's first words, plural. WaWeeCookie.,WaWeeCookie. A run on word, translated..Wally cookie. Our late great Wally, our first family dog, ate our baby's cookie. Wally was no dummy. He always sat next to the person who made the most crumbs.I never had a problem with crumbs on the kitchen floor. Wally lived to eat. He came running when he heard the electric can opener hum. He ate a whole roast beef that was sitting on the counter, cooling, waiting to be sliced and served. He and a neighbors dog had the worse dog fight , under our picnic table, over a dropped peanut butter and jelly sandwich that one of the kids dropped. Our favorite Wally food story is the morning we heard him howling . WE rushed down to the sound, which was coming from the kitchen. He had managed to open our pantry door and got his whole head stuck in a box or dog biscuits. I have such a picture of that in my head, that I still laugh when I think of it. Here was this dog shaped like a bowling pin, with a box of Sergeants Dog Biscuits where his head should be. Every family needs a dog so that you can have family stories. Wally's stories are the best. Not a surprise that we still refer to him as the late great Wally.Whatever happen to that kid who had his cookie eaten?
