ON THE BACK BURNER

Our Rabbi's sermon this Shabbat brought up a phrase that sets my teeth on edge. It is"been there, done that". I strongly dislike this phrase. To me, when I would look for people to volunteer to positions that I knew they could do and add to our knowledge base and then have them say, "No. Been there .Done that", made me uncomfortable. I would think,"so what. I've been there and done that, too. What's the big deal? You have a skill, we can use it. Share it." Our Rabbi pointed out that this statement was , in fact, the sign of a boring individual. Is the person saying this statement so bored that they can't do something a second time, or a tenth time. Do they read a book once and never read another book.Or do they read the book once, like it, read it again and find something in it that they missed, read it a third time and find more to think about. Do you look at a sun rise and not do it again, because " been there, done that?"So the next time that I look for volunteers and I hear that phrase, I am going to confront that person with being boring, a bore. Just remember, my Rabbi said it first.
