ON THE BACK BURNER

I recently read of a woman who has run Marathons in all 50 states. I think that she is now in her late 60's. I wish I had thought to do that. I have heard of runners who do a once a year run that equals their age. I'm not so sure I'm up for that. But it sounds like fun. I don't bowl, I don't play tennis, I don't golf. But I loved running. I never cared if I was the slowest one out there. What I told myself is that if our car ever broke down, I could run to the next exit and get help. A very comforting feeling. Another pleasure that I got from running is that I got to run over a lot of territory in many cities. If you aren't on your feet, you miss a lot . I had a friend from South Africa and we would run through the streets of Chicago early on a Saturday morning. We saw statues that I never knew were there, small city oasis of greenery and pocket neighborhoods. I still remember that as a high light of my running. I haven't found a substitute for running.Walking doesn't do it for me. I hear there is a game called "pickle ball". I've never seen it played, but as long as my feet stay on the ground, I'm game to try.
