ON THE BACK BURNER

There is a yiddish word, hamash, that means comfortable, family, welcoming, nice, warm. You say,"he's hamish",or"the evening was hamish". What you mean is "he is a good person" or "we felt very comfortable and at home ". Well we spent a hamish evening last night at a friends house with members of a committee that we are all on. And it was hamish. There were 13 of us and it was just so hamish. There was talk, laughter, discussions, and good food. Everything that makes for a wonderful evening with people who you have known for awhile. But in a social setting, not a committee setting. It was so nice of our two hostesses to do this for the committee. It was a hamish thing to do for us and everyone of us thank them. In fact , we are a family.
