Every now and then, I have a night where I get up 3 or 4 hours after I fall asleep, and then I can't get back to sleep. This is one of those nights. I figured that I would use the extra quiet time to think.I thought about how we some times had to drive
back to Chicago on the night of July 4th and how as we drove through back roads in Michigan, we could see the night sky full of fireworks from various small farm communities. We'd do the "awe: when we particularly liked a display. That was one thought that
I had. Then I started thinking about how on the day after Labor Day, we'd go back to Evanston and make our semi annual trip to DeWitt's, a children's shoe store on Broadway Ave. It was ritual. Slippers, leather in red or navy , one pair each. P.F.Flyers,or
Keds, gym shoes, only worn in gym class, one pair each. Sunday school shoes, only worn to services and Sunday School. Kids dressed up in those days, one pair each. School shoes, one pair each. I wondered what we did after the kids outgrew DeWitt's. I can't remember.
I just know that it was a fun afternoon and everyone came home with 4 boxes. I hoped that their feet didn't grow before school started in 3 days. Much later, I was friends and in a Chaverah with a DeWitt daughter. She said we put her through college. I wasn't
surprised.
