ON THE BACK BURNER

I was thinking about first names. You tell someone your name is Leona and you get"my great Aunt was named Leona." People aren't using the solid first names like, Joan, Betty, Sandra. I haven't met a Sandra since I left New Orleans. I know a Sandy. Maybe her name is really Sandra. And Dorothy. My cousin was named Dorothy. At least that is what we called her. I understand there is a family story about her name. Her birth certificate has her first name as Dora. Seems that Uncle Jake, her Dad, a newly arrived immigrant to America, couldn't spell Dorothy but could spell Dora. So the story goes. And what about my sister. Theresa Pearl. Theresa is a saint. Some neighbor suggested that name to my Mother, an impressionable young green horn and my Mother thought that it was a really nice name. We called my sister Pearl. A very appropriate name for a pearl of a sister.
