ON THE BACK BURNER

Anyone who has ever owned a dog has experience the dog getting out, wiggling out of a collar, not coming when running free at the beach,in general, your dog has the upper hand. Here is the scenario : I was mopping our lanai and I caught a glimpse of a blond bushy tail out side. It was Cricket. She often follows me outside, and I let her. This time, I didn't realize that she did, so I didn't call for her after I was ready to go in. If I hadn't been mopping the floor at just that spot and she wagging her tail, I don't know how long she would have stayed there. Luckily, she isn't a wanderer. Over the years, we have had our share of misplaced dogs. There was the late , great Wally who could not be contained in a yard. We just missed having a lawsuit when he courted a show dog and broke through their screen porch to get to the dog who was in heat. Then there was Charlie the first who got lost at our cottage when we went for a walk and there was an unexpected white out. We got separated and he was accidentally locked in an ice fishing shed for 24 hours. Then, Charlie Two ran out of our car at a rest stop before I got the leash on him. That was scary because he was running toward where the ten wheeler trucks park. We got him back by hollering "Charlie, you want a cookie?" Not to be forgotten, we had Jake who was stolen from our daughters yard while we were on a cruise. The kids Mom made him return him to us. Then we were dog sitting Lucky for the first time and he slipped through a 1 inch opening. I chased him all over our development with visions of him running out on the road and then onto the highway. I gave up searching for him and about an hour later, a person drove up our street with Lucky sitting in the passenger seat. It's a wonder I still don't have any grey hairs !!
