ON THE BACK BURNER

It is the first day of the new year and we ate black eyed peas. I can't remember why we eat Black eyed peas, but it has something to do with having a successful upcoming year. Back in New Orleans, we ate the black eyed peas and to ensure that we had a monetary good year, we ate boiled cabbage.....with a silver dollar cooked with it. Remember, I had a mother who came from Russia. What did she know about black eyed peas and cabbage with silver dollars. I have no idea who talked her into these dishes, but we ate it every January 1. Nothing wrong with either dish. We looked forward to the tradition and with the secret ingredient(ham hock) cooked with both dishes, it was really good. We always had silver dollars around the house. My Uncle Jake was a gambler and he carried a lot of silver dollars in his pocket. In fact, I had so many that a few years back , I sold some. Seems they are worth more than a dollar. See ,black eyed peas worked.
