ON THE BACK BURNER

There is something missing . Snow, cold, ice, snowsuits, boots, scarfs, to mention a few things. It's supposed to be Christmas, and except for the traffic jam on I-75 at University, it's hard to tell. We use to go "downtown" to see the windows at Marshal Fields and Carson Pirie Scot and oh and ah over the moving displays on State Street. Lunch was at Marshal Fields Dining room where there was a humungous Christmas tree. The toy department was a dream come true. Toys were everywhere and there was a line to see Santa. I don't remember the kids asking to see Santa, but the thought must have crossed their minds. Our Swedish next door neighbor introduced us to Swedish pancakes and lingonberry jam and whipped cream. They borrowed our vacuum cleaner after Christmas every year, to pick up the tree bristles. I guess mine did it better. It was an Electrolux that we got when we first married. We had that machine for 50 years. I wish we still had it. And sometimes I wish that we still lived in that bubble of time. Sigh.
